Hemant Bhargava is the Jerome and Elsie Suran Professor in Technology Management at the UC Davis' Graduate School of Management. He joined UC Davis in July 2003, and served as Associate Dean from 2010 to 2013. He has previously been on the faculty at Penn State University's Smeal College of Business Administration, and the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, and with visiting appointments at Carnegie Mellon University, Humboldt University (Berlin, Germany) and the University of Maastricht (The Netherlands).
Hemant studies Technology Competition and Strategy and the economics of information goods - including telecommunication products, media and entertainment goods, online services, software, electronic gadgets, and alternative energy technologies. Technology goods are subject to distinctive supply side forces (e.g., their unique cost structures) and demand side forces (e.g., the prominence of network effects as a source of value creation). This leads to distinctive and intriguing competitive practices in pricing, revenue generation, product design, bundling, advertising, and supply chain design. Hemant's research on these topics has been published in several academic journals including INFORMS Journal on Computing, Management Science, Marketing Science, Production and Operations Management, Information Systems Research, Journal of Management Information Systems, IEEE Computer, Decision Support Systems, and Interfaces. Hemant also studies business analytics, where his research focused on processes and techniques related to model-based decision making, and development of information technology solutions to facilitate use of models and data in decision making.
Dr. Bhargava has served in several leadership positions professionally and at UC Davis. He was Department Editor at Operations Research, and has been on the editorial board of other leading journals including Management Science and Journal of Management Information Systems. He has co-chaired several leading academic conferences, including the INFORMS Computing Society workshop and INFORMS Conference on Information Systems and Technologies. He co-founded the TEIS workshop (Theory in Economics of Information Systems) in June 2010.
